In addition to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates that Novozymes holds for all its production plants, Novozymes has been granted the highly respected Food Safety System Certification 22000, also known as FSSC 22000 or FS22000, for its plants producing a wide range of food enzymes such as baking enzymes and Acrylaway.
One less thing to worry about
Consumers’ and manufacturers’ focus on safety in food products is rapidly rising. This is happening at a time when the risk of food safety incidents occurring is increasing concurrently with the globalization of the supply for food production and the increase in the complexity of the supply chains. By getting a FS22000 certificate and by having a total food safety system in place globally, Novozymes can provide food producers with the assurance that Novozymes’ enzymes are safe to use. Novozymes’ plants producing baking enzymes, including Acrylaway, have also been rated as “superior” by the American Institute of Baking (AIB) – yet another stamp of approval.
Once certified – Accepted everywhere
There are many types of certificates, and Marianne Bie Frydendahl, Director of Quality Management at Novozymes, explains why Novozymes applied for the FS22000 certificate: “Novozymes has chosen the FS22000 standard because it’s recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative – GFSI – a foundation that several of Novozymes’ customers and other important players in the food industry are members of. One benefit of the FS22000 certification is that once you have been approved, it’s widely accepted.
Novozymes is making it easier for a large group of customers when its safety schemes follow the GFSI-approved standards. “We want it to be simple and smooth to do business with Novozymes”, says Marianne Bie Frydendahl. “If our customers’ biggest concern is the safety of their consumers, we can give them the reassurance they need.”
Furthermore, the FS22000 fits with Novozymes’ existing business and management systems, as it is based on the structure known from the ISO standards.
Taking safety and quality seriously
All of Novozymes’ feed and food producing plants, regardless of geographical location, are subject to the company’s global Good Manufacturing Practice, which is based on international legislation. It includes every step of the process from raw materials to distribution of finished goods. In addition, all of Novozymes’ food and feed products, produced at any plant, are covered by
Novozymes’ hazard analysis, which has identified the critical control points (CCPs) and the way to control them.
Full traceability – from suppliers, throughout all steps in production, and on to the customers – is ensured by a global IT platform and by unique identification of all raw materials and products. All suppliers are evaluated and approved by a global supplier approval process as part of the Novozymes Management System.
Novozymes has earned its reputation as a reliable partner through four decades of transparent and pacesetting safety – and quality control. Novozymes’ quality system is much more than a product quality system; it is an integrated, electronically controlled management system covering not only the processes that are necessary for enzyme production, but also product development and supporting processes – and therefore also food safety, environment, occupational health & safety, and social responsibility.
